How To Do Keyword Research
Posted by Nathan Sloan in Featured How To, How To
If you are wanting to build a profitable website then you are going to need to know how to do keyword research.
Having ranked 100′s of posts and pages in Position 1 and Page 1 of Google, this post is going to show you exactly how you can do the same.
We will start with what keywords are, you will also find out how to set up your website correctly around one main seed keyword and then how to find ongoing profitable keywords that will build you a profitable business.
What Are Keywords?
The search engines are based on keywords. It is basically the word or phrase that somebody types in to Google. The goal for your business is to be in position one for the most profitable keywords.
What is a Seed Keyword?
The seed keyword is what your home page and website is built around. You can go for a much more competitive term as there will be many links going to your home page over time. For example this website is built on the term “How to start an Internet business”.
How To Find Your Seed Keyword
A great resource is the free Google Keyword Tool. Start by typing in your market e.g. ‘Marketing’ and it will bring you back a list of related sub-markets to choose from. I would recommend choosing a 3-5 word keyword to build your website on.e.g. ‘Social media marketing tips’. This is the Google Keyword tool.

Browser and Buyer Keywords
You MUST know the difference between buyer and browsing keywords. It really can be the difference between you making sales every single day and struggling online and eventually giving up. Here is the difference.
Browsing Keywords – These are terms like ‘best hosting provider’ ‘top diet plans’ ‘latest lcd tv’s’. These people are in ‘research’ mode and do not intend on buying right there and then. This is where 95% of online marketers get it wrong and wonder why they do not make sales.
Buyer Keywords – These are terms like ‘Hostgator discount’ ‘truth about abs coupons’ ‘the Samsung 23 lcd tv best price’. These people have done all their research and are ready to buy. These are the keywords that you want to be in position 1 for.
The ‘Searches’ Myth
Many people will teach you to only go for keywords that have at least 300 searches per month, however this is not always the case. Some of my most profitable keywords show 0 searches.
SEO Competition
This is a critical step. Once you have a list of keywords that you would like to rank for then you need to know how strong the current top ten people on Google are.
How To Save Yourself Months of Wasted Time and Money
The easy way (for even a complete beginner) to see exactly how strong the competition is by using a tool like Market Samurai. You just simply type in the keyword and it will show you exactly how strong your competition is. Here red means avoid and green means go. Simple.

It will show you the top ten websites ranking on page 1 for that term:
DA – How old the website is.
PR – What their page rank is.
BLP – How many backlinks they have
Title – If they have the keyword in their meta title
URL – If they have the keyword in their page URL
Desc – If they have the keyword in their meta description
Head – If they have the keyword in their page title
Summary
Getting good at finding the best keywords is a skill. This means that anybody can learn how to do it. All you have to do is to practice going through the process a few times. If you have any questions regarding keywords research simply send me a message. I am happy to help you out.
